Nonetheless, they come with the caveat of faster deterioration—up to eight times more rapid than panels on Earth. This is chiefly due to exposure to high-energy particles and cosmic events, necessitating the use of innovative materials like gallium arsenide, which boasts a remarkable efficiency of 34% compared to traditional silicon panels (European Space Agency, 2022).

However, logistical and technical challenges remain a major hurdle, warranting diligent research and refinement of delivery methods before widespread implementation can occur.
Weighing the Pros and Cons of Space Solar Panels
While the potential benefits of space solar panels are impressive—including continuous energy generation and zero emissions—the associated costs are high. Launching materials into orbit is estimated at £7,716 per kilogram, heightening feasibility concerns. Moreover, maintenance in space poses significant challenges, alongside the rapid degradation of solar cells (International Energy Agency, 2023). Despite this, progress in technology, such as advanced thin-film solar constructs, may help mitigate these issues, driving innovation in the field.
